A Charismatic in Denial?

Not to keep harping on about this… but in case you want to see how the story ends, here’s a 26 minute video of Doug Wilson talking to Mark Driscoll about Spiritual Gifts and Cessationism. It won't answer your every question, I'm sure, but at least it's a good example of how to discuss areas of disagreement in an amicable way. Enjoy!

I’m really glad you linked to this, because it’s such an excellent conclusion (of sorts) to your posts a few weeks back. The thing that most baffled me was when Wilson said he knew God had given him that information, in the midst of a discussion in which he remained resolutely committed to the belief that revelatory gifts had ceased. I genuinely couldn’t see the difference between what Wilson was saying and what Driscoll was saying at that point, other than nomenclature (prophecy or revelation for Driscoll, information for Wilson). And for a natural polemicist, Driscoll was extremely good at articulating a middle ground! Ccessationism still strikes me as very odd…

    That’ll be “Cessationism”, I guess…

I find it very interesting how pretty much all of Doug Wilson’s scriptural references are to Deuteronomy. He doesn’t deal with the NT passages which encourage the use of spiritual gifts. Biblically, one significant change between Old Covenant and New Covenant is the pouring out of the Spirit on all flesh.

Dan - I think in part that would be a reflection of DW’s Covenant Theology (see my paper on this website!) and the consequent failure to see the discontinuities between pre- & post-Pentecost. It is why DW baptises babies, and it is why he applies Dt the way he does here.

I do find his squirming attempt to retain the badge of ‘cessationist’ quite amusing though!

That’s be the attempt at theological ‘origami’ that Driscoll refers to…

I’ve always held that in answering the question “does God heal, give prophecies, give tongues, etc, today?” you look at scripture which indicates that he will - “in the last days I will pour out my spirit”... and then you compare to experience - I’ve seen tongues, headings, prophecies, etc. so unless my eyes deceive me then the evidence falls rather weightily on the charismatic side.

But how interesting that God still uses us even when our mind seem to be adverse to accepting certain truths! And Wilson does raise at least one valid caution when asking Mark what he would have done if the husband denied his actions…

If my experience or testimony doesn’t tally with the word of God then I accept that either my understanding of the word is incorrect or my experience wasn’t what I thought it was. DW appears to do neither, he just labels these things ‘weird’.

His default stance appears to be,“I don’t believe you” and the best you could hope for is, “well that was weird”. Although I quite like the guy I’d look for more in a pastor.

A lack of personal experience in something is not grounds to disprove anything.
